Opiate Addiction Treatment

Opiate Addiction

There have been many advances in recent years in the treatment of opiate addictions and methods to help patients manage the symptoms of withdrawals. Presently, doctors and drug therapists have developed new strategies for the treatment of those dependent on drugs such as heroin and prescription painkillers. Opiates are powerful pain-relieving drugs.  Howeverthese drugs are very addictive. Opium-based drugs, including Heroin, Morphine, and Oxycontin are hard to overcome.  However now there is hope.  There are many drug treatment programs and medications that can help even those with long-term opiate addictions and allow them to quit and live a long-life free of opioids.

Opiate Detox Programs

Opiate addiction is a physical condition and because of this it is possible to medically treat the problem. One of these techniques is an opiate detox program. Programs of detoxification usually take place in inpatient rehab settings and they allow the patient to cleanse all the drugs from their bodies and to end their dependency on an opiates.

Detoxification programs are usually provided along side with counseling and therapy.  These programs help the patient with the root cause of their addiction. These programs usually prescribe a substitution treatment, for example, Suboxone or Subutex. This assists in the patient’s detoxification process. These medications help to stabilize the patient and allow them to manage the often dreadful side-effects caused by stopping taking drugs such as heroin. Suboxone can help these patients with the usually painful withdrawal symptoms.  This is important because it will prevent a relapse.

One common strategy to help a person with an addiction is a rapid drug detox program, this is often termed the Waismann method. This method offers drug detoxification within a short time frame. Within the Waismann method, a person is placed under a local anesthetic and this is followed by a doctor cleansing the body of opiates. The patient is unconscious during the process and this means that they are usually not aware of the severe impact on their body of the withdrawal symptoms.

After Care Opiate Programs

After a detox program has been successfully concluded there is a need to continue to support the patient as there is a real risk of relapse. There needs to be a comprehensive aftercare program. It is often the case that a certified doctor may prescribe an individual an opiate inhibitor such as Naltrexone. This drug eliminates an individuals’ physical cravings for a drug such as heroin and also ensures that they do not get their usual high from taking a narcotic. It is important that an aftercare program employs a licensed therapist that will assist a person on the long journey to sobriety by developing an individualized program that allows a person to tackle the underlying issues that led to an opiate addiction.

Other after-care programs include meetings for sober living and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). The program helps a person to overcome the many physical and psychological issues that are associated with kicking a habit. Sober living is a program that provides alcohol and drug-free residences.  They play an important role in helping patients to overcome their drug dependency and live a sober lifestyle, free of any form of addiction. Sober living helps people to become clean of drugs by providing a supportive environment that promotes sobriety.

The sober living environments provide recovering addicts with the right setting that they need to be drug-free.  Within these houses they can network with those who have beaten an addiction. Sober living and Narcotics Anonymous programs have a proven record of success and they have helped numerous recovering opiate addicts to find the strength that is needed to maintain sobriety.  Suboxone is a prescribed medication that is recognized as very important in helping people to end an addiction to a range of opiate drugs.
